Gene M. Burd

Gene M. Burd is the Managing Director of the firm’s Kyiv, Ukraine Office. He is a native of the Ukraine and is fluent in Russian and English as well as understands Ukrainian.
For over 10 years, Gene has advised international and domestic companies on various aspects of doing business in the countries of the former Soviet Union including: international corporate, business, and investment structuring, legal and corporate risk assessment, international distributorship and sale and purchase agreements, trade financing, letters of credit, and international real estate investments and management. Gene also represented client in major international commercial litigations and arbitrations involving multimillion dollar contractual and fraud claims. His arbitration experience includes representations in arbitrations under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, International Chamber of Commerce, London Court of International Arbitration, and London Maritime Arbitration Association.
Gene’s pro bono and community activities include teaching a course in international litigations at the Rutgers School of Law in Camden, New Jersey. He is a past trustee of the Voorhees Environmental and Cultural Education Foundation, an organization dedicated to the redevelopment of the former Buzby Landfill into oriental gardens and community center. Gene has also counseled a US-Russian Exchange an organization dedicated to developing business ties between Russian and the United States of America.
Gene is a present co-chair of the International Law Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association. Gene also represents Marks & Sokolov at the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council.
A graduate of Rutgers Law School, Gene also holds a Masters in Civil Engineering from Purdue University ( M.S.C.E. 1991 ) and a Certificate in International Legal Studies from Salzburg University in Austria. He is admitted to the Bars of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and to the United States Federal District Courts of New Jersey and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Gene has been licensed as a professional engineer in the State of Indiana.
