YOU ARE INVITED to a working luncheon with a delegation of ten top leaders from Ukraine in the fields of civil society and democracy. The topic of the presentation and the discussion will be "The Private Business Community and the Development of Civil Society and Democracy in Ukraine. 

The USUBC working luncheon will be held on Friday noon, February 4, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the law offices of Baker & McKenzie, 815 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. in cooperation with the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (USUF).  Please RSVP immediately to register your attendance. 

The working luncheon will include Ukrainian leaders:

          (1)  Oleh Rybachuk, Chairman and co-founder of the NGO "Centre UA. He has served as a Member of Parliament and has held positions in government, including as  Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine on European Integration and Chief of Staff and Advisor to the President of Ukraine under President Yushchenko. 
          (2)  Volodymyr Ariev, Member of Ukrainian Parliament, (Our Ukraine), Committee on Fighting Organized Crime and Corruption;
          (3)  Oles Doniy, Member of Ukrainian Parliament, (Our Ukraine) - Committee on Science and Education;
          (4)  Andriy Shevchenko, Member of Ukrainian Parliament, (Block of Yulia Tymoshenko) - Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information. President of the Center for Public Media, an NGO promoting public broadcasting in Ukraine;
          (5)  Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of the Institute of World Policy, author for Mirror Weekly;
          (6)  Olena Gromnytska, Vice-president of Glavred-Media and chief editor of the magazine Profil;
          (7)  Mykola Kniazhytsky, Journalist, “TBi” TV channel director;
          (8)  Kateryna Levchenko, President of International women’s Rights Center “La Strada-Ukraine”, member of the Parliamentarian Assembly of OSCE;
          (9)  Vitaly Portnikov, Editor-in-chief of TVi since May 2010, author of the weekly TV-show "Kyivski pohliad", 
          (10) Svitlana Zalishchuk, Co-founder of the NGO “Centre UA”, coordinator of the New Citizen Public Campaign. (See more bio information below)

The Ukrainian delegation will make opening remarks followed by a Q&A/discussion session.  A light lunch will be served.  There is no charge for the luncheon.

CIVIL SOCIETY LEADERS FROM UKRAINE

(1)  Oleh Rybachuk, Chairman of the board of the NGO “Suspilnist Foundation”, as well as Chairman of the Board and co-founder of the NGO “Centre UA”, where he initiated the New Citizen Campaign. He has served in several senior government posts, including Vice Premier for European Integration and Chief of Staff to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. Before joining politics, Rybachuk had a career in banking, including positions in commercial bank as well as National Bank of Ukraine. 
 
(2)  Volodymyr Ariev, Member of Ukrainian Parliament, (Our Ukraine), Committee on Fighting Organized Crime and Corruption. Previous positions include: reporter for the news agency "Vikna" (Windows), program "Good morning, Ukraine (TV Channel UT-1), journalist of TSN, TV (Channel 1+1), a free lance journalist, author of the program “Nonprovince” (TV Channel STB). In 2004-2006 - producer-general of the program “Zakryta zona” (5 Channel).
 
Awards: Marchenko award (2004) for the best media work on human rights,  Kryvenko Awards for journalists. “Teletriumf” National premium award (2005) Graduated   from the Institute of Journalism at Kyiv University. 
  
(3)  Oles Doniy,  Member of Ukrainian Parliament, (Our Ukraine) - Committee on Science and Education. Head of the Art Association “Ostannya Barykada”, President of the Center for Political Values Research.  Head of the “Moloda Ukraina” Association, head of the “Moloda Ukraina” party. University of Kyiv, history. 
  
(4)  Andriy Shevchenko, Member of Ukrainian Parliament, (Block of Yulia Tymoshenko) - Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information. President of the Center for Public Media, an NGO promoting public broadcasting in Ukraine. Previous positions include: the editor-in-chief of  "The 5th Channel, host  for  programs "Reporter", "Theme of the Week", "Theme of the Day", "Breaking News" (Novyi Channel).  

Awards include: The Press Freedom Award from Reporters Without Borders (Austria, 2005), The Best News Presenter, The Best News Program, The Best Documentary (‘Teletriumph’, 2005).  Journalism at Kyiv University, political Science and Economics at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Yale World Fellow (2008). Draper Hills Summer Fellow on Democracy and Development at Stanford (2009). 
 
(5)  Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of the Institute of World Policy, author for Mirror Weekly. Previous positions include editor in chief of Glavred,  journalist covering international policy, screenwriter and editor, served as an expert  the EU project for informing the public regarding EU institutions.
Awards: Honored Journalist of Ukraine (2009), a Distinction Medal and an Honorary Certificate of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ukraine (2005, 2008), and a Special Distinction Certificate of the Minister of Interior of Ukraine (2008). Education:  T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University (2000),   professional development programs in Japan and South Korea. 
 
(6)  Olena Gromnytska, Vice-president of Glavred-Media and chief editor of the magazine Profil. Upon her leadership the magazine has won in the nomination Magazine of the year of the national prize The man of the year . Olena Gromnytska was the first woman press-secretary of the President on the territory of Post-Soviet countries. In this position she established the first system of informational support of the President of Ukraine and created the first professional press-centre in the higher authorities of our country. An honored journalist of Ukraine. 

(7)  Mykola Kniazhytsky, Journalist, “TBi” TV channel director. Previous positions: deputy director of informational agency “UNIAN”, director of international non commercial organization “Internews-Ukraine”, “STB” director, president of the National TV company of Ukraine, member of National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio, director of “Gazeta 24” and TV channel “Tonis”. Education: journalism faculty, Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, faculty of foreign affairs. 

(8)  Kateryna Levchenko, President of International women’s Rights Center “La Strada-Ukraine”, member of the Parliamentarian Assembly of OSCE. Coordinator of All-Ukrainian network against commercial sexual exploitation of children, Member of Expert Council Under Ministry of Family, Youth and Sport on Gender Discrimination.
 
Previous positions: Public Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Member of Ukrainian Parliament (2006-2007), Ukrainian National Council Against Trafficking in Women and Children under the Ombudsmen, member of working group combating with trafficking in women of the World Council of Churches. Member of the Board of International Renaissance Foundation (Soros Foundation in Ukraine), founder and the first President of the Women NGOs Feminist Association Humanitarian Initiative (Kharkiv).
 
An author of more then two hundreds scientific articles and books on these topics: women’s rights protection, combating trafficking in people, especially women and children, promotion of gender equality, children right protection, prevention of domestic violence, cooperation between GOs, IOs, NGOs, human Rights and Law Enforcement Bodies. 

(9) Vitaly Portnikov, Editor-in-chief of TVi since May 2010, author of the weekly TV-show "Kyivski pohliad", columnist of the Israel's most-popular Russian-language newspaper Vesti and Moscow-based Evreiskie novosti,  analyst of the Nezavisimaya Gazeta, specializing in post-Soviet countries, and cooperates with the Russian and Ukrainian services of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

As a free-lance journalist he is  publishing articles in Russian Russkij Telegraf, Kommersant, Vedomosti, Vremya MN, Vremya novostej, Moskovskiye Novosti, Obshaja gazeta, Ukrainian Den', Korrespondent, Profil, Delovaja Nedelja, Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, Kontrakty, Novynar, Glavred, Latvian Biznes & Baltia, Telegraf, Estonian Estonia, Postimees, Polish Polityka, Gazeta Wyborcza, Polska, Byelorussian Belgazeta.  Previous positions - editor-in-chief of the Media-Dom holding & the Ukrainian newspaper Gazeta 24. Education: Moscow State University, Faculty of Journalism. 

(10)  Svitlana Zalishchuk,  Co-founder of the NGO “Centre UA”, coordinator of the New Citizen Public Campaign. In recent years she was working as a project manager in “Souspilnist Foundation”. Also she has an experience of job in the government institutions as a press-secretary to Chief of Staff to the President of Ukraine and Vice Prime Minister for European Integration. In 2005 she worked at the “5 TV-channel” as an international reporter. In 2006 graduated from Institute of Journalism, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
