Five students of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy School of Law were again chosen as winners of the Ukraine National Jessup Moot Court Competition and qualified to represent Ukraine at the International Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition that will take place in Washington D.C. on March 25-31, 2012.

The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy team members this year are Mariana Antonovych, Vasylyna Odnorih, Maksym Popovych, Andrii Gumenchuk, and Yehor Turcheniuk. These students have been hard at work since September preparing for the Competition, researching complex issues of international law, preparing written briefs, and practicing oral arguments.

This year Ukraine will also be represented by another winning team from Ukraine, students of  the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University Institute of International Relations.  These two teams are colleagues representing Ukraine in the world’s largest moot court competition for law students.

Every year, the Jessup Competition brings together students from more than 500 schools representing over 80 countries.  National competitions are held in most countries each spring, and winning teams advance to the White & Case International Rounds to compete for the World Championship Jessup Cup.  Now celebrating its 53rd year, the Jessup Competition boasts a proven record of producing many of today’s leaders in the field of international law.

In past years, the Ukrainian American Bar Association and the Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation contributed funds to cover part of the expenses for transportation,  lodging and fees for the students.  As in past years, we ask for financial support to assist the winning teams from Ukraine in their participation in this international competition.

Checks may be sent to Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation with a note “for Jessup Competition” and mailed to Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation, P.O. Box 46009, Chicago, IL 60646-0009, or a contribution may be made through PayPal using credit cards or electronic check.

The Kyiv-Mohyla moot court teams repeatedly win the Ukrainian national rounds of the Jessup International Moot Court competition and they represent Ukraine in Washington D.C., where each year they placed in the top 20 teams from 70 countries worldwide.  It is a remarkable honor under any circumstances, but more so considering this and other international  competitions are conducted in English.
