24 April, 2012: “Ukraine must adopt Russia’s approach to IT legislation,” stated Director of TA Venture Investment Fund Victoria Tigipko at a seminar on Legal Regulation of Internet Activities and Innovative Business in Kyiv. The legal seminar was organized by TA Venture Investment Fund and Salans International law firm.  “The Russian experience in legislative regulation of Internet activities is useful for Ukraine, and events such as the seminar held by TA Venture and Salans need to become a tradition in our country. Internet entrepreneurship is actively growing here and requires new approaches and adaptations to the legal framework,” she notes.

One of the main themes of the seminar, among others, were the tax aspects of implementing international Internet projects in Ukraine. Victor Naumov, Managing Partner at the St. Petersburg office of Salans and one of the leading lawyers in intellectual property and information technology, advises companies implementing such projects to firstly pay attention to issues connected with determining the form of incorporation, choosing a jurisdiction, protecting users’ personal data, and protecting the rights of future users of the service. He emphasizes that “protecting intellectual property should be given significant weight by those developing projects, as should developing policies to block any illegal content that a user might upload”.

Natalya Selyakova, partner at Salans’ Kyiv office, noted that the legal community realizes the significance of developing business on the Internet and the importance of professional legal support in that area. “Salans’ international expertise, and our Russian experience in particular, allows us to provide reliable support for the growth of innovative business in Ukraine,” she concludes.

The event gathered more than 100 participants, including lawyers, IT entrepreneurs, and journalists from the business and legal worlds. The seminar covered legal aspects of creating and running a business online and trends in legislation development applicable to internet entrepreneurship, in part based on Russia’s experience.

Other presenters at the seminar included attorneys Nikolay Zhovner and Viktoriia Fomenko, Ukraine patent attorney Oksana Horban, and Salans Kyiv paralegal Denis Kulgaviy.
